Spanish Past Tense: Regular Verb Conjugation (AR, ER, IR)

This tense in Spanish shows that actions were already completed or done. Differently from other languages, verbs change in the affirmative form, and in the negative form, they are preceded by the word “no” + verb in past form.

As it was already explained in other lessons, the common sentence structure is as follows (although there are other ones):

Subject + verb (in past) + complement

Let’s see some conjugation forms below, using three regular verbs—one for each typical verb ending: -ar, -er, -ir.


Verb: ganar (to win) — regular “-ar” verb

Spanish English
Yo gané I won
Tú ganaste You won
Él ganó He won
Ella ganó She won
Usted ganó You (formal) won
Nosotros ganamos We won
Nosotras ganamos We won (feminine)
Ustedes ganaron You (plural) won
Ellos ganaron They won
Ellas ganaron They won (feminine)

Spanish:
Carla va con frecuencia al lago de su pueblo a ver a las diferentes aves que viven allí. Desde que está en el auto de su padre las observa, comienza a tomar fotografías. Las aves son de muchos colores y hay aves lentas y aves rápidas, pequeñas y grandes; de todo tipo. Es muy interesante para Carla ir al lago. Ella siempre invita a más amigas, pero nunca pueden ir porque estudian mucho, van con sus familias a otros paseos, están interesadas en hacer deportes, o simplemente, quieren estudiar.

Otra actividad que Carla hace en el lago es leer libros. Es muy interesante para ella, y lo disfruta. Carla tiene dos hermanos; uno de 7 años y otro de 9. El hermano pequeño de Carla es muy inteligente, y disfruta ir con ella al lago.

En este momento, Carla está comiendo un delicioso desayuno con él. Su nombre es Daniel, y orienta a Carla cada vez que observa un ave distinta, para tomarle fotos. Él está también comiendo; están preparando diferentes tipos de jugos de frutas, muy fríos, porque hace calor en el pueblo.


English:
Carla frequently goes to the lake in her town to see the different birds that live there. Since she is in her father's car, she watches them and begins to take photographs. Birds are of many colors, and there are slow birds and fast birds, small and large; all types. It is very interesting for Carla to go to the lake. She always invites more friends, but they can never go because they study a lot, go with their families on other outings, are interested in playing sports, or simply want to study.

Another activity that Carla does at the lake is reading books. It’s very interesting for her, and she enjoys it. Carla has two brothers; one is 7 years old and the other is 9. Carla’s little brother is very intelligent and enjoys going with her to the lake.

Right now, Carla is eating a delicious breakfast with him. His name is Daniel, and he guides Carla every time she observes a different bird, helping her take photos. He is also eating; they are preparing different types of fruit juices, very cold, because it’s hot in their town.
